Ah, my most favorite time of year. The time of year when Bill's extended family congregates in Dante's Inferno and hangs out doing not much of anything... Seager Family Reunion time. Bill's Grandma Seager passed away this past December. With that came the need to get her personal belongings sorted and cleaned out. No easy feat. She grew up during the Great Depression part of a very large, very poor family-- this for her equalled the inability to throw ANYTHING away. What that equalled for us? The daunting task of cleaning out her trailer home with other people who inherited her inability to part with "things". Luckily, some of the work had been done prior to our arrival. There was still much to do and we all plugged away at doing it. I hung out inside the home trying very diligently to lead the "make a decision on this item" charge. Not having the "pack rat" gene in any form, this was like being dropped into my worst nightmare, watching these people totally incapable of getting rid of things that really had no value (not monetary or sentimental). They were just things. It solidified for me that fact that "things" are really not that important-- and you really can't take anything with you but your memories.
The boys worked both inside moving furniture around and outside helping with the weeds and removing a dilapidated fence and in the evenings had earned the right to play some video games with their cousins. Bill's brother brought his Wii and set up Rock Band Beatles for the kiddos to play. It was so funny watching Romney and William sing and play their hearts out. Romney quickly discovered how much he enjoyed singing (he could get the highest score on the mic). By the end of the evening, he was doing squats with rock star hands and totally getting into it. William tried his hand on the mic a couple of times, (shocking from our more reserved son!) but ended up loving the bass guitar best of all.
After having hours of fun all together, Bill and I almost lost all of our determination to not having any gaming machines (minus the DS, of course) in our home. Luckily for us (however, unlucky for the boys) we were stuck in Kanab, a city devoid of any stores that would have made a impulse purchase like that possible. So (for now) we are still just borrowers of our Rock Band fun.
