Pun intended. I know, it is a terrible, horrible, cliche pun for a title, but I couldn't resist, having spent last week preparing a lesson on puns for a group of 22 2nd and 3rd graders. It was just too obvious not to use. Normally, Easter is a nice, benign spring holiday that is enjoyable enough. What isn't to like, flowers, bunnies, candy, egg hunts- a true celebration of renewal. The last day of spring break, the day before our giant flooring project started, this one felt like more of an exercise in parental duty than a lovely day at the park.
The boys woke up to find their baskets lamely hidden in plain view. They seemed content with their tiny lego set, their stuffed animal and a few choice pieces of candy. Bill and I shopped last minute the night before at the grocery store and just felt like we grabbed what they had so the kids would have something. Lame parenting at it's best.
We had thought about a trampoline for their "Easter Present". We usually try to do something big and fun for them to do outside as a way to encourage them to get out more as the weather gets warmer (Weather is supposed to do that, right?) However, our good friends and neighbors beat us to the punch and now they can go to someone else's house to bounce all they want (even better!)
The best part of the day was definitely the annual easter egg hunt at Gilgal Gardens that another friend hosts. The kids love to run around with their friends hunting for eggs. The grown-ups love to talk to other interesting adults (like this artist) while the children are happily occupied. It is the perfect Easter scenario. Plus, the universe must particularly like this friend, because even when the forecast looks terrible, the sun always seems to shine for the event.
Romney was a little disappointed with his egg hunt spoils this year. However, he ate so much candy from those eggs that he had a giant stomach ache by the time Bill brought him home. It was a good lesson in portion control.
I had to leave the party early to teach sharing time in primary. My heart is so not into it right now, that it was incredibly difficult to have to say goodbye early to head to church (alone), but the lesson at least went well (better than I expected) and I can say I still have some modicum of integrity for not bailing and making it someone else's problem for the day. Perhaps not our best Easter ever, but still a wonderful chance to look at all the blossoms and realize that even though it doesn't seem like it this week, winter (metaphorically and literally) doesn't last forever.
